Singapore Mahjong winning hands

A normal winning hand is four sets plus exactly one matching pair called the Eye. The tiles below show how that shape becomes each named Singapore scoring pattern.

The universal shape

Four sets + one Eye + the minimum Fan

Each set is a Chow, Pong, or declared Kong. Without a Kong, the finished hand contains 14 physical tiles. Every declared Kong adds one extra physical tile because it still counts as one set.

Build the shape

Chow, Pong, Kong, and Eye

Chow ๅƒ

Three consecutive numbers in one numbered suit. Winds, Dragons, Flowers, Seasons, and Animals cannot make a Chow.

Pong ็ขฐ

Three identical numbered or Honor tiles.

Kong ๆ

Four identical numbered or Honor tiles. Declare it and take a replacement from the back of the wall.

Named patterns

Normal winning combinations

These still use the four-sets-and-an-Eye shape. Compatible values add together unless a rule says the value is a total.

All Chow ยท 1 Fan

Four Chows. The Eye cannot be a Dragon, Prevailing Wind, or your Seat Wind. A discard win must have more than one possible winning tile.

Ping Wu ยท 4 Fan total

An All Chow hand with no exposed Flowers, Seasons, or Animals. Its 4 Fan replaces the 1 Fan for All Chow.

All Pong ยท 2 Fan

Four Pongs and/or Kongs, plus one Eye.

Half Color ยท 2 Fan

One numbered suit mixed with Winds and/or Dragons.

Full Color ยท 4 Fan

Only one numbered suit and no Honors. An Honors-only hand is also classified here in the default table.

All Terminal ยท 9 Fan

A valid hand using only 1 and 9 tiles.

Half Terminal ยท 2 Fan

Only terminal tiles and Honors, with no numbered tiles from 2 to 8.

Chicken Hand ยท 0 Fan

A legal shape that earns none of the other values. It cannot win under the default 1-Fan minimum.

Shape exceptions

Special wins

These can win without an ordinary four-sets-and-an-Eye hand. Automatic Dragon and Wind wins should be explicitly agreed before play.

13 Wonders ยท 8 Fan

One 1 and 9 from each numbered suit, every unique Wind and Dragon, plus a duplicate of any one of those tiles for the pair.

Eight Flowers ยท 12 Fan

All eight Flowers and Seasons wins automatically. Holding seven and taking the eighth from another player's draw wins for 10 Fan.

All Dragons ยท 7 Fan

Pongs and/or Kongs of all three Dragons. Treat automatic-win behaviour as a house-rule choice.

All Winds ยท 12 Fan

Pongs and/or Kongs of all four Winds. Treat automatic-win behaviour as a house-rule choice.

Before you call ่ƒก

Three checks prevent a false win

  1. Shape: four legal sets plus exactly one Eye, unless it is a listed special win.
  2. Value: at least 1 Fan under the default minimum.
  3. Restriction: the winning discard must not be the tile you most recently discarded or a passed same tile before your next move reset.
